Interning in Curaçao: Jasmijn’s Experience

Heading towards the sun

Doing an internship in Curaçao is a special experience for many students. From the start of my studies, I knew I wanted to do an internship abroad. After hearing all the enthusiastic stories about tropical beaches, wonderful weather and the relaxed atmosphere, choosing Curaçao was easy. With slightly overweight suitcases and a head full of excitement, I stood at Schiphol Airport. There, I said goodbye to my family, my boyfriend and, of course, the cold.

During my first few days in Curaçao, I had to get used to the heat and the people around me. Fortunately, I already knew two girls beforehand, which made everything much more relaxed. We ended up in a student house with twenty other students, so there was never a dull moment. After long internship days, we often jumped into the sea to cool off and had dinner together. We stayed active with bachata lessons, sunset yoga and games of padel. And of course, we also counted our dance moves on nights out as part of our weekly workout.

Getting started at a marketing agency in Curaçao

Through Wereldstap, the organisation that helped me with my travel, accommodation and internship, I was matched with Marvelous Media & Communications. We clicked straight away during the interview, and at the end of the conversation I was told that I could start with Marlous in September. I was really looking forward to it.

On my first day, it immediately became clear that I had joined a friendly yet hard-working team. From the start, I was given a great deal of trust and responsibility. Together with Nina and Roos, I worked on various projects. My first major task was developing social media plans for 2026 for several clients.

After pitching these plans, we got to work creating the content. For one client, I was even allowed to shoot, select and edit the visuals myself. I found that incredibly exciting and educational.

An amazing experience

What I enjoyed most about my time in Curaçao was the balance between working and enjoying life. During the day, I was fully focused on my internship, but as soon as I closed my laptop, the fun began. For anyone still hesitating about doing an internship abroad: do it. It may be exciting, but the memories, friendships and experiences you gain in return are more than worth it.

Why internships in Curaçao are so popular

Doing an internship in Curaçao is a special and educational experience for many students. The combination of working at a professional company and living on an island means that no two days are the same. Not only do you gain work experience in your field, but you also learn how to navigate a different culture, a different way of working and an international environment. This combination is exactly what makes an internship in Curaçao appealing to many students and often valuable, both personally and professionally.
